Union County Community Rises to the Challenge!

Lilly Endowment GIFT VI matching opportunity seized

LIBERTY, Ind. - Thanks to many donors and supporters, the Union County Foundation has successfully completed Lilly Endowment Inc.’s GIFT VI matching challenge. More than $1 million was added to the Foundation’s charitable endowments with gifts and respective matches to forever benefit our community.

In August 2014, Lilly Endowment launched a sixth phase of its Giving Indiana Funds for Tomorrow (GIFT) initiative for Indiana community foundations. Based on Union County’s population the Union County Foundation was eligible to receive up to $500,000 under GIFT VI. To receive the $500,000 grant, Union County Foundation had to raise matching dollars from donors.

The Foundation eagerly participated in this initiative and recently completed it by raising enough funds to meet the full matching grant ahead of its March 31, 2016 deadline. Donations received since the beginning of the period were eligible to be matched $1-for-$1 if the destination was an unrestricted community impact endowment, and matched $0.50 for every $1 donated to any other permanently endowed fund at the Foundation.

Many permanent funds benefited from this incentive. Generous gifts combined with matching funds have made for a wonderful boost to Foundation’s charitable assets. The Union County Foundation is extremely appreciative for each gift received from donors during the GIFT VI initiative. “We are so proud of the strength of philanthropy in our community,” said Danka Klein, executive director at the Union County Foundation. “This addition to permanent funds means that significantly more grant dollars will be available for our competitive community grants, scholarships and designated grants every year, forever.” added Klein.

The generosity of Lilly Endowment continues to make a huge impact in Union County and across the state of Indiana. GIFT VI included a total of $66 million dollars of matching money offered to 94 community foundations and affiliate funds. This latest phase of the GIFT initiative truly rallied the Union County Foundation, its staff, board, volunteers and donors to bring in and grow charitable dollars for our community. “Meeting this hefty fundraising goal and fully seizing the dollars offered by the Endowment is an accomplishment Union County can truly be proud of,” Klein concluded.
